CB Desron Keir Returning for 2020

To say the Fighter Jets had a dominant defence in 2019 would be an understatement. In 8 games, AFL opponents were held to just 70 points with the Jets forcing 26 turnovers.

One of the men responsible for that success is returning cornerback (CB) Desron Keir. The Ontario-native made his mark early-on in his first AFL season, becoming the first player in Jets’ history to record two interceptions in a game and the first player ever to return an interception for a touchdown. He dominated on the field, being named to the 2019 AFL Second Team All-Star at kick return (KR).

Keir’s AFL journey started early in 2019. Along with teammate Leo Mantuila, he moved to Cold Lake at the end of April to join the team for the Jets’ first training camp.

“I’ve built a relationship with a couple guys on the team and the City of Cold Lake was so good to me while I was there, there’s no other team I’d want to play for in the AFL,” said Keir.

Heading into the new season, Keir has big plans for the Jets in 2020.

“My expectations for the 2020 season is to pick up where we left off and go get our national championship,” added Keir.

Growing up and playing for the Downsview Thunder in Scarborough, ON, Keir played in the CJFL for the GTA Grizzlies as well as in the B.C. Conference with the Westshore Rebels.

His athleticism on KR and at CB made him a perfect fit for the Fighter Jets high octane offence. While at slot or lined-up at receiver, his speed made him a threat to opposing defences with his breakaway play making ability.

Defensively, Keir had 3 interceptions in 2019 with 87 return yards. Together with Jets defensive back Devron Davis, who was signed by the Argo’s, the two picked off QBs 7 times, making that side of the field on defence a ‘no fly’ zone for opposing wideouts.

Despite his success so far Keir says there are a few areas of his game he’d like to work on.

“I hope to become better all-around teammate and doing whatever I need to do to help my team get the win. The best is yet to come.” Says Keir.

The Fighter Jets would like to welcome Desron back to the team for 2020. More returning player announcements are to follow as the roster continues to take shape for 2020.
