GAMEDAY – Fighter Jets in Airdrie to battle the Irish

The Cold Lake Fighter Jets are on the road this afternoon in what will be the fifth match-up in franchise history.

Taking on the Airdrie Irish, the two teams met once before, back on May 25th, in the opening day of the 2019 Alberta Football League season. Eventually winning 27-6, the Fighter Jets had touchdowns from Melvin Abankwa, Jarret Janotta, Mike Holman and Leo Mantuila in the teams debut.

Since then the Fighter Jets have remained on-top of the AFL standings, with wins over Calgary, Fort McMurray and Red Deer. With no lack of output from the offense, it is the defense who is turning heads in AFL circles. The group has allowed just 30 points this season, while the #2 defensive team, the CA Bucs, have let up 122 in 5 games.

Despite being 4-0 the Fighter Jets are taking nothing for granted coming into this game. In anticipation of the match-up, team veterans stressed to stay focused on the weeks task which is the Irish and to mentally prepare to face a team hungry for their first win.

The last time the Fighter Jets were in action was before the AFL Canada Day break, when the team was in Red Deer on June 22nd. Winning 38-3, the game also marked the return of QB Mike Holman who passed for 149 yards and 1 touchdown. Leo Mantuila meanwhile continued to dominate on the ground, rushing for 208 yards. In 4 games, Mantuila has failed to reach the 200 yard mark only once, when the Airdrie Irish defense held him to 41 yards.

Kick off is set for 5:30 this evening from Genesis Place in Airdrie.
